Why You Should Think Like An Ant

This year it feels like there has been a massive shift of tectonic plates which have caused an earthquake in the business environment.

This shift has completely changed the entire business landscape, and most founders and CEO's think it's unique to their situation, but it is not.

Doesn't matter what industry you're in, in some way or form you have been affected over the last few months. This change has resulted in companies now clutching for revenue.

Of course, you continue to exploit the revenue streams that you already have in the current environment, and you will hold on tight to keep them. But the smart founders work a little different. To stay ahead of the game and future proof, they are also exploring new revenue streams.

Let me give you an example of an excellent organisation that does just that.

The other day, I was watching an ants nest (don't ask me why but Lockdown has not made me crazy, yet). When you observe an ants nest, you can see their tribe that is working day to day to run between newly found food sources when somebody dropped a little ice cream or chocolate cake.

Join the tribe and get articles like this one directly to your inbox every week.

Part of the tribe will go and exploit that stream of a food source. But what you also find is that away from the actual tribe, are all these little explorer ants going out and finding new sources of food.

What they look for are new food sources before the other ones run out.

It’s a game of exploiting existing sources and exploring new sources.

It's a little bit like innovation (R&D) or finding new revenue streams for business organisations.

It's about going out there looking around for new revenue streams and do so before existing ones run out.

Make sure that you've got your feelers out there and you're sensing the market for how it's shifted, seeking out new applications for your product or service and finding additional services or products that you can offer.

Explore how you can provide value to your existing customers and maybe even adjacent markets for new customers.

Exploit existing revenue streams but don't forget to explore.

Explore & Exploit.
